I have spent most of my life loving horror films and books, I find my horizons surprisingly still expanding after 27 years. I am also currently returning to school this winter to become a Crime Scene Technician at Broward College in Florida.
As a gamer…
A gamer long before there were horror games (but much happier afterward) my first experience was with a text based game waaaay back in1987: Infocom’s “Lurking Horror”. Both literature and video rolled-into-one, it sparked chills with its potent writing and gradually unfolding story. The experience was great for its time but, in essence, just a tease; for the medium had not yet really grasped the concept of horror videogames.
It wasn’t until 5 years later that I would come across another horror game in 1992, with the release of Alone in the Dark. With Alone in the Dark’s release, both game players and makers stood up and took notice, understanding the possibilities and everything at that point changed!
(As of note, a few might remember a little game in 1989 called “Sweet Home” for 8-Bit consoles – Which inspired Resident Evil. Somehow that one got past me and I didn’t learn about it till the ability to play it had long passed. But, I digress…)
With Alone in the Dark, the survival horror genre was born and the entire gaming community took notice!
Since then there have been that segment of the population that salivates at any chance to tread into some nightmarish world in order to face countless horrors. I was and am one of those gamers, and while it took awhile for the genre to mature and provide epic creations, things are well established now and sales of survival horror titles are major enough to ensure that the genre will be with us forever…Even if each and every venture isn’t a instant classic.
